Several weeks back we had our annual family reunion here in sunny (windy) Port Isabel. Twenty five people gathered at the Lemke abode for a solid week!
We ate,shared, partied, drank, ate somemore, and yes...fished!
My two sons, daughter in law and myself were the main culprits. early to rise and late to bed makes you older fast. But...we caught fish..no real big fish but good numbers of solid 17-19" trout. We waded long bar and drifted the east side pot holes. A large percentage of our fish came from the east side. We were finding trout of all sizes, more 141/2 inchers than anything where the color changes were taking place. water in the 3-4 ft range. It seemed that when we would dift into water over 4ft the bite stopped.
Topwaters worked early, but once the winds set in plastics were the go to bait. We used Gamblers, H&H Queen Cohos, and Gulp to secure limits.
This week I had two good friends from Houston and Center, Texas visit. We followed suit of our reunion group in the eating and drinking. We fished hard and were rewarded with good numbers of trout.
The majority of our fish came from Long Bar and the East Bars.
A few good size trout, but again we had to cull to get limits.
The water on Long Bar is gin clear in most places and it seems the trout want the slightly colored water. The tides this week have been excellent with good strong current.
In fact on Friday we fished the far North end of Long Bar and although the wind was blowing us one direction , the incoming tide had a different mind. We found trout were the tide run and the winds mixed on the edges of the bars.
The go to baits were red/white Gamblers and the Queen Cohos. At one point we powered down close to a guide who was fishing croakers and at 8:30 he left with a 15 fish limit. Another guide pulled into his spot and was immediately on. We were easily within casting distance and by 9am we were also headed home with our 15 fish limit! Good Days! More to come!
