Happy New Year

2012 should be a great year or thats what we always say and wish for. As I get older, turn 65 on January 13th, I find that there are more and more things to take up my time, but really less that are really rewarding. I have found it is really much easier to fish an afternoon high tide than getting up before sunrise and hoping for decent water. Don't get me wrong, the early mornings definitely have their place, but it does get harder to break out of bed these days....more hurts. The winter brings a definite change to our waters in the LLM. The reds are schooling like college kids on Spring Break and the trout, good ones are harder to locate. We have been fishing the Airport Cove area and taking 22-28 inch reds without much todo. Topwaters and spoons are the go to lures. No brainers!

Yesterday we headed into South bay around 2:30 and on 3 drifts we had picked up 6 good reds. Left there to fish Mosquito Flats for trout, but zeroed out. We were due back in by 5 and as we started back the birds were working ribbonfish something fierce near the old causeway. There were lots and lots of trout also feeding, but to catch a keeper was magic! As we headed for home the birds once again stopped us at Marker 5...same game, we were in by 5:30. Short day but productive!

I see where my Blog friends are catching snook at the Brownsville channel. Haven't been there lately due to the fact it is too much trouble to pull my boat out and a long run from PI. But, as the state's record holder for snook ,( I need to toot my own horn as I have NEVER seen an article written where my 41" snook has been mentioned) I need to venture that way soon.

Hope all of you have a great season and if you see UnoMas on the water say hi!
